New _or_ Free Alphabet
2013-2014
The New _or_ Free Alphabet is a system of writing made out of litter and free objects. Using children’s ABC books as a model, the letters of the alphabet have been assigned to individual items of trash acrophonically; based on the first letter of the American English name of that object (aluminum foil = A).
The litter for this alphabet was collected during a series of walks to and from my studio in Midtown Manhattan in late winter and spring of 2013. It consists of items that are seen often and presumed to be common throughout the streets of New York City.
